There are times when we know we need to do something — whether it’s organizing the closet, getting back into a fitness routine, making up with a friend or looking for a new job. Whatever it is, that thing can only be accomplished when creating enough motivation around the first step — simply starting.
THE FIRST STEP IN CREATING MOTIVATION
Decide to start.
The #1 question I get when doing a live broadcast and/or meet new people, in general,
“How do I get back to _____? I’ve lost my motivation to do it.”
You can fill in the blank:
- Eating right
- Exercising again
- Prioritizing my relationship
I hope you’re ready for a slap in the face because I’m about to get super real and brutally honest.
YOU NEED TO DECIDE TO DO WHATEVER YOU KNOW YOU NEED TO DO.
If it’s your business you need to grow, get your butt in gear and just decide to make it happen. Stop creating stories and worrying / whining about it and just make it a priority and schedule it.
If you know you need to start exercising on a daily basis, freaking decide to start already.
Notice, I didn’t write, start and keep going.
Truth alert: There are days I don’t feel like doing most of the things I have to do. I guarantee that when I wake up in the morning to exercise, I don’t feel like exercising. But I know I need to start.
Therefore, I give myself permission to quit after five minutes.
CREATING THAT THING AND GETTING HER DONE IS MADE ALL THE MORE POSSIBLE IF YOU COMMIT TO 5 MINUTES. THAT IS A SURE-FIRE WAY YOU’LL GET YOUR MOTIVATION BACK.
So, tomorrow you best start and (only) give me 5 minutes of whatever it is!
- Nutrition — plan out your meals
- Fitness — walk around the block
- Relationship goals — be kinder and sweeter and more giving to your partner
Now, I’m not saying you have to follow through for the next 30 days, but watch what happens when you start! You’ll be creating the necessary mojo to keep on keeping on.
