How to Come Down From That Big Event

SMART banner

So, you had the BIG event – a conference, a presentation, a podcast or product launch, a wedding – and now you’re in a funk. How do you get out of the funk and find the energy and focus to take the necessary steps towards your next big goal?

Here are 11 tips to help you come down from the big event:

1) Don’t be disappointed when others aren’t as excited about your experience as you.

Your friends and family weren’t there and they didn’t work as hard as you did to cross that finish line. So, unless someone else is dying to hear it, keep that excitement to yourself. Don’t forget about it or hide it, but just know that others won’t be as invested as you are.

2) Schedule the day (or two) after the big event to do absolutely nothing.

You need a “me day” – a day that allows you to unpack, decompress, and just relax. It’s important that you write this down on your schedule!

3) “It can wait.”

I know it’s tempting to want to get right back into the daily grind of your life – you’ve got emails, phone calls, and countless errands to run. However, fight that feeling. Everything can wait another day or two. It’s just super important to take the time you need to reflect and internalize the experiences you had.

4) Create a summary

Take out a sheet of paper (yes, paper) and write a review of whatever the event was: What did you accomplish? What do you want to do next time? What are some actionable things you should start undertaking?

5) Take a walk

Put some shoes on and go outside. The goal of this walk isn’t to get your heart rate up and the sweat flowing. No. You’re just going outside and enjoying some time to yourself. Put on some relaxing music and just walk.

6) Exercise

This shouldn’t be a surprise to anybody. I’m not saying you need to go to the gym and do your hardest possible workout the day after you get back from the event. But, take a day off and then get your body moving. Stretch and then get those endorphins going! It’ll be good for your energy, good for your memory, and just good for your soul. It’s win-win-win.

7) Get outside

Get out into nature and take in the beauty around you. Practice mindfulness. Stretch your arms. Feel the breeze. Enjoy some time in nature for at least 10 minutes.

8) Have sex and connect with your partner

Now, notice that this is #8 on the list. It’s definitely important to take time to reconnect with your partner, but you need to make sure everybody is relaxed and able to enjoy themselves.

9) Read

Find something to read that won’t tax your brain – a magazine, the paper, or some light reading. Don’t read something related to the conference or the work you do. This is just time to relax and let your brain drift.

10) Disconnect

For half of the day, put your phone on the charger and disconnect. Be present in your life and with the people around you. if you can go for longer than half a day, do it! You’ll have plenty of time to go back to the phone tomorrow, but for now, just disconnect and enjoy.

11) What are you most excited about next?

You should have something to look forward to. If you don’t have something already planned, then get on it! Just something that will keep you motivated to get through the next three months. It doesn’t have to be another big event, it could be a vacation – just anything that will keep you looking ahead.

Follow these 11 steps and you’ll avoid the post-event funk that gets the best of us. Congratulations and getting done with your big event and good luck on the next one!
