- Chalene Johnson
episode

Chalene also examines the Polk County sting involving Walt Disney World and Universal employees, and why child safety conversations need to go beyond stranger danger. Bret Johnson and Grady Judd’s Viral Clips

[00:00:00] Chalene Johnson : Okay, well this is gonna be kind of fun because Brett Johnson is here. He doesn’t know, I just asked him if he’d heard about either of these stories. I didn’t give him all the details and he has no idea. First I have to say, I have rules when it comes to talking about true crimes. My thing is, if there’s nothing I can add to it, then there’s no point in like just talking about crime to talk about crime.

[00:00:21] Chalene Johnson : Especially if it’s like nasty, horrible things. And this one does, is nasty and horrible, but I also think it’s worth sharing and I’m gonna explain why. It’s very interesting who got arrested. Okay, so first of all, Polk County Florida, it’s somewhere between Tampa and Orlando and it’s very different from Miami.

[00:00:40] Chalene Johnson : Like Miami is, it’s like a whole another world. Like this is very country, if you will. And the sheriff there, his name is Grady Judd, and girl, let me just tell you, if you’ve ever seen one of his press conferences, he pretty much tells it like it is. He puts up the mugshots of every single crazy person that has been arrested or he…

[00:01:07] Chalene Johnson : Like he’s constantly turning press conferences into these, they’re almost like comedy shows. And he puts up these pictures of people and he has zero filter. And what’s crazy about these press conferences from my standpoint is, these are people who’ve been arrested. I mean, they’ve been charged but they haven’t been convicted.

[00:01:25] Chalene Johnson : But he, he says some crazy ass about them. Okay, I’m just gonna play you guys a little clip if you’ve never seen any of these. Some of these I’m sure you have ’cause they’ve definitely gone viral, but here you can take a little listen.

[00:01:38] Clip: When you start shooting at a SWAT team it doesn’t end up well. And we shot Raymond Martinez a lot.

[00:01:45] Clip: We killed him graveyard dead. We gave him exactly what he asked for after negotiating and trying to deescalate him for hours. When you have a gunfight with a SWAT team, you lose every time. That was his last bad decision of the night. We have received information on social media that some of the criminals were going to take their criminal conduct into the neighborhoods.

[00:02:11] Clip: I would tell them, “If you value your life you probably shouldn’t do that in Polk County,” because the people of Polk County like guns, they have guns, I encourage them to own guns. And they’re gonna be in their homes tonight with their guns loaded And if you try to break into their homes to steal, to set fires, I’m highly recommending they blow you back out of the house with their guns.

[00:02:34] Clip: Here’s a message. Mind your business. Don’t commit crime. Leave

[00:02:39] Bret Johnson : people alone. You got any other questions?

[00:02:42] Clip: Do you, at this point, know how many shots were fired?

[00:02:44] Bret Johnson : I don’t have, know how many shots were fired, but enough were fired.

[00:02:48] Clip: The armed assailant doesn’t plan on you fighting back. He plans on having a gun, doing all the shooting, and you’re just the sitting duck.

[00:02:58] Clip: Well, the ducks need to shoot back. We will chase you to the ends of the earth. Did you hear me? His mama drove him there to have sex. I mean, what do you say to your son when you’re letting him out of the car there? Have a good time? Be safe? Make Mama proud? I’m sober as most judges right now. I, I swear she said this.

[00:03:20] Clip: Question, Sheriff, if I could. Uh, some of the comments that you made last night about, uh, the shooting, uh, the suspects possibly, and the s- comments today about the, uh, ready for a gunfight, was that in the heat of the moment? Do you have any regret about that in light of what- No, no, I don’t, uh, I, I not only have no regret, I’m pretty excited about telling you that’s exactly what would have happened.

[00:03:40] Clip: And make no mistake about it, there’s nothing about politically correct in a gunfight. There’s nothing about politically correct when you’re keeping people alive and well and safe. And the people of this community and these law enforcement officers come first. I meant every word of it then, and I mean every word of it now.

[00:03:57] Clip: If you surrender peacefully, that’s the way we prefer it. You start pointing guns at us, you can not only plan on, but you can guarantee we’re gonna shoot you. He said he liked handcuffs and blindfolds. Well, the good news for him is he got his handcuffs.

00:04:15

Polk County Sting, Disney and Universal Arrests

[00:04:15] Chalene Johnson : Okay, so last Thursday, so that’s the day before Halloween, he gets up there and he announces the results of a seven-day undercover operation.

[00:04:25] Chalene Johnson : And I promise I’m not making this up. He called it the Poke Around and Find Out Number Two. Because he’s Polk County, okay? So the first one, I think I had mentioned this one to you, honey. I’m not sure if I did or not. But there were 281 people arrested, 488 charges, all in one week related to a sting on child predators.

[00:04:50] Bret Johnson : Ooh.

[00:04:51] Chalene Johnson : Mm-hmm. It was actually, this is the second sting going on with the same detectives, and with this one, the detectives were online pretending to be kids. 32 grown adults got in their cars and drove out to meet what they thought was a child to have a sexual encounter. It’s pretty disgusting. 117 people accused of trying to buy sex from minors.

[00:05:22] Chalene Johnson : Okay?

[00:05:23] Bret Johnson : Mm-hmm.

[00:05:23] Chalene Johnson : But I don’t know if you know about this, did you hear about where many of these people worked?

[00:05:28] Bret Johnson : Honey, I have no clue about any of this.

[00:05:30] Chalene Johnson : Okay. Well, just try to guess. If we’re talking, this is between Tampa and Orlando.

[00:05:34] Bret Johnson : And where they worked?

[00:05:35] Chalene Johnson : Yeah.

[00:05:36] Bret Johnson : The Villages.

[00:05:37] Chalene Johnson : Nope. If you were a predator-

[00:05:39] Bret Johnson : Disneyland.

[00:05:40] Chalene Johnson : Yep. Walt Disney World- Mm … and Universal, like the happiest place on earth, and according to

[00:05:47] Bret Johnson : this article- Yeah, I’m not so sure it’s the happiest place on earth, ’cause if I ever go there, I’m miserable.

[00:05:53] Chalene Johnson : It’s true.

[00:05:54] Bret Johnson : It’s the worst place on earth.

[00:05:56] Chalene Johnson : When our kids were little, we had the Disney passes, ’cause you could get them super cheap, and I would just go there for like a lunch for a couple

[00:06:04] Bret Johnson : hours.

[00:06:04] Bret Johnson : Which was awesome, because I never had to go.

[00:06:06] Chalene Johnson : Yeah. I- You, you took- I have no interest in going now whatsoever …

[00:06:09] Bret Johnson : you took, you literally took one for the team on that one, ’cause I can’t stand that place.

[00:06:13] Chalene Johnson : I know. Well, you, you’re gonna offend a lot of people right now, ’cause there’s a lot of Disney adults out there.

[00:06:17] Bret Johnson : That’s okay. That’s- But- Guess what?

[00:06:19] Chalene Johnson : What?

[00:06:20] Bret Johnson : You gotta pick your side of the fence.

[00:06:22] Chalene Johnson : I suppose. Let’s just hope that this, I don’t know, this is just a really disgusting story, but the reason why everyone’s talking about this particular story is because 17 of the people who were arrested worked at Walt Disney and Universal.

[00:06:38] Bret Johnson : Didn’t you say there was a… Give me the number again, that was total of?

[00:06:40] Chalene Johnson : 117.

[00:06:42] Bret Johnson : So that means almost a quarter of them were from-

[00:06:45] Chalene Johnson : A quarter or is that, like, 10%?

[00:06:46] Bret Johnson : Well, I mean, a quarter would be if it was 125 of them. So yeah, it’s probably closer to, like, 15%.

[00:06:52] Chalene Johnson : Okay. Yeah. And that’s just kinda crazy. Disney and U- Universal fired all of them.

[00:06:58] Chalene Johnson : There was also a youth football coach involved and a cheer coach, and they all got arrested on this. I’m gonna play a little clip

[00:07:07] Clip: And I’m going to lead with the number one candidate. This is Rashon Creighton. He’s 31 years of age. He’s a head coach of the Davenport Titans. That’s a youth football league, and the children that play on that youth football league are between 11 and 14 years of age.

[00:07:29] Clip: And they’re part of the Mid-Florida Youth Conference of Football and Cheer. So guess who he showed up to have sex with? A 14-year-old little girl. The talk that he used was so graphic that we obviously can’t talk, release that to you here today. But he said, among other things, “Well, I can pick you up at school, and then we can have sex in the car.

[00:07:57] Clip: You see, we’ve gotta be careful because just these texts will put me in jail And then when he arrived at this location, he brought, among other things, a battery-charged sex toy and a lot of other play toys to go with that. Oh, did I tell you? He brought them in a Uber Eats delivery bag. You see, he used to deliver for Uber Eats.

[00:08:24] Clip: So the next time Uber Eats shows up at your house, I wonder what was in that Uber Eats bag just before your McDonald’s or your, uh, Taco Bell.

[00:08:36] Chalene Johnson : And in the prostitution sting, Orange County, which is a county in Florida- Mm-hmm … and a county in California, but we’re talking about Florida, one of the deputies, the Orange County School resource deputy, a deputy from the school whose actual job it is to be at the school, and Judd said this guy looks at him and said to the sheriff, “Are you really gonna put my picture up there?”

[00:09:00] Chalene Johnson : And Judd basically said, “Yeah, I am, because you’re in law enforcement and people expect more, especially of you. Yeah, buddy, you’re going up on my board.” You gotta love him.

[00:09:13] Bret Johnson : Oh, no, I’ve listened to the… I have not heard this story, but I’ve heard interviews with him, and he’s basically just tells you, like, “Don’t come to my town- Yeah

[00:09:21] Bret Johnson : and mess around.”

[00:09:22] Chalene Johnson : The crazy thing is a lot of times he will, when he does his press releases, he will share the things that these individuals say during their arrests, and it’s shocking. Apparently, what deputies and detectives heard from these people who were arrested in this most recent sting was so repulsive that prosecutors say that they’re going for the max, the max in Florida.

[00:09:47] Chalene Johnson : I mean, it’s just gross. I mean, people traveling to meet minors for sex, second-degree felonies, up to 15 years. It’s not gonna be enough.

[00:09:56] Bret Johnson : Yep.

00:09:56

Child Safety Beyond Stranger Danger

[00:09:56] Chalene Johnson : Absolutely not gonna be enough. My thing is, a few weeks ago, I talked about how so many kids are exposed to porn, and we have no idea. We Gen Xers, older millennials, we’re warning our kids against, like, “Don’t talk to the man in the van, the stranger with, who says he’s got puppies,” but that’s not even the issue I don’t even know if we can teach kids how to be safe, because what they have to be safe from is people online catfishing them, and they think that they’re talking to another kid a lot of times.

[00:10:31] Bret Johnson : Mm-hmm.

[00:10:32] Chalene Johnson : How do you tell your kids who to trust when so many of these predators-

[00:10:37] Bret Johnson : Are in these kind of positions.

[00:10:38] Chalene Johnson : Exactly. That’s what I was gonna say. It’s always a coach or a, a teacher.

[00:10:42] Bret Johnson : Hey, hey, it’s not always a coach. I was a coach.

[00:10:45] Chalene Johnson : Okay. But I’m not saying every coach. I- But I’m saying-

[00:10:48] Bret Johnson : I know, it’s,

[00:10:48] Chalene Johnson : it’s-

[00:10:48] Chalene Johnson : it’s, sorry, 90% of the time, maybe 95% of the time, it’s a male.

[00:10:52] Bret Johnson : Oh, yeah, it’s a male that’s in a position that is almost like it’s an authority position, where, like, they’re looked at as, like, the leader of the group. Yeah. So, like when you said a cheer coach, a- A Boy

[00:11:06] Chalene Johnson : Scout leader …

[00:11:06] Bret Johnson : a Boy Scout leader. Like, look at the gymnast guy, the trainer.

[00:11:09] Chalene Johnson : Yeah.

[00:11:10] Bret Johnson : The guy from that, that-

[00:11:11] Chalene Johnson : From Michigan State …

[00:11:12] Bret Johnson : Michigan State. He was… Well, he was not… He just was one of their trainers at Michigan State, but he did everything bad with the US Olympic girls.

[00:11:20] Chalene Johnson : He did everything bad at Michigan State, too.

[00:11:22] Bret Johnson : And, and the US Olympic girls, too. Yeah. But yeah.

[00:11:24] Chalene Johnson : Yeah, he’s just a bad human.

[00:11:26] Chalene Johnson : And you’re right, yeah, these people, they have uniforms sometimes and name tags, and parents trust them. Like, “Listen to your coach.”

[00:11:33] Bret Johnson : Yep.

[00:11:33] Chalene Johnson : Right? “Listen to your teacher.”

[00:11:34] Bret Johnson : Mm-hmm. And kids are taught that those are kind of like safe professions.

[00:11:39] Chalene Johnson : Yeah, and so when you think about Disneyland, these are people wearing a Disneyland badge and a uniform.

[00:11:45] Bret Johnson : And ears maybe.

[00:11:46] Chalene Johnson : Yeah. I’m just saying, like, I just don’t know if we’re telling our kids, if we’re giving them the best advice.

[00:11:55] Bret Johnson : We ask questions a lot when we do our Patreon-

[00:11:58] Chalene Johnson : Mm-hmm …

[00:11:59] Bret Johnson : and Between Friends and-

[00:12:00] Chalene Johnson : Mm-hmm, mm-hmm …

[00:12:01] Bret Johnson : the Vault. I’d like to ask a question.

[00:12:03] Chalene Johnson : Okay.

[00:12:03] Bret Johnson : I would like to know how many people that listen to this show-

[00:12:08] Chalene Johnson : Yeah

[00:12:09] Bret Johnson : attend Disneyland regularly without children.

[00:12:13] Chalene Johnson : Okay.

[00:12:14] Bret Johnson : Versus that they go with their grandkids or their kids or whatever. And

[00:12:18] Chalene Johnson : that means what, honey?

[00:12:19] Bret Johnson : Nothing. I’m just curious. I- You’re

[00:12:20] Chalene Johnson : just curious?

[00:12:21] Bret Johnson : I’m curious because that would also lead to your story. Like, how many parents are there with their children?

[00:12:27] Chalene Johnson : Mm, mm-hmm.

[00:12:27] Bret Johnson : Like, you know, bringing their kids along. I’m not saying that if you go there and you don’t have children, you’re a predator, but, like, you know, you’re talking about people that work there, and they’re working there to be around kids. I’m not saying all people that work there are bad predators- Of course not

[00:12:43] Bret Johnson : but that’s why they work there when they are a predator.

[00:12:46] Chalene Johnson : Yeah, and so that’s the rub, right? So these are arrests. Again, they’re, they’re not conviction. But I just think people who seek out jobs where you have access to children-

[00:12:57] Bret Johnson : This-

[00:12:58] Chalene Johnson : That doesn’t n- necessarily mean that they’re all bad. No. But that should mean that they have to be held to a higher level of screening, like background checks and screening that is more thorough than other types…

[00:13:11] Chalene Johnson : Like, listen, if you are working in a job where you don’t have access to children-

[00:13:16] Bret Johnson : I

[00:13:16] Chalene Johnson : get- … then you don’t have to apply to the same standards.

[00:13:18] Bret Johnson : Yeah.

[00:13:18] Chalene Johnson : But if you’re a coach, if you’re a teacher, if you’re a scout leader, if you’re a daycare worker, you know, you, you can’t just get a pass because everybody likes them.

[00:13:25] Bret Johnson : Well, I know that, I mean, not every school, ’cause obviously there’s still teachers that do this, but most schools now, like high schools and junior highs and stuff like that, if they have male coach-

[00:13:37] Chalene Johnson : Mm-hmm …

[00:13:38] Bret Johnson : they don’t have that male coach alone with kids ever. There’s always supposed to be another adult accompanying that coach, especially in, like, girl sports.

[00:13:49] Chalene Johnson : So who’s gonna rat the, um, the coach? The student? Who’s gonna

[00:13:53] Bret Johnson : rat?

[00:13:53] Chalene Johnson : Yeah, the student.

[00:13:54] Bret Johnson : What do you mean? Like-

[00:13:55] Chalene Johnson : Well, like, if it does happen.

[00:13:57] Bret Johnson : I’m just saying that they’re just asked to do it. Yeah. It’s not like there’s not a video camera on them. There’s not l- anything policing them. Maybe there should be. The, the kids might not even know it.

[00:14:05] Chalene Johnson : They should make it known to the kids.

[00:14:07] Bret Johnson : Yeah, like, I remember when I coached at Mission, it was, like, part of, like, the curriculum that we learned is, like, if you’re gonna be alone, especially a male-

[00:14:16] Chalene Johnson : Mm-hmm …

[00:14:16] Bret Johnson : coach with another girl, with a minor- Mm-hmm … high school kid, and you’re a male coach, you should have a girl trainer or a girl coach with you at all times when you’re there alone with that person.

[00:14:29] Chalene Johnson : Yeah. That seems smart.

[00:14:30] Bret Johnson : Yeah.

[00:14:31] Chalene Johnson : The CDC says, and this isn’t gonna surprise anybody, 90% of child sex abuse is committed by someone the child or the family trusts.

[00:14:41] Bret Johnson : Oh, yeah.

[00:14:42] Chalene Johnson : 90%.

[00:14:44] Bret Johnson : It’s the grooming.

[00:14:45] Chalene Johnson : So yeah, do the background checks, but also be aware.

[00:14:48] Bret Johnson : Yeah.

[00:14:49] Chalene Johnson : Be aware. It, like you said, supervision, boundaries. If you have a weird sneaking suspicion like something doesn’t seem right, you can’t worry about offending somebody or making them feel uncomfortable.

[00:15:04] Chalene Johnson : Too bad. Like, you’ve gotta protect the kids.

[00:15:07] Bret Johnson : I have another policy. Anybody listening that has young children- Mm-hmm … and you’re gonna do a babysitter, get a girl babysitter, please.

[00:15:14] Chalene Johnson : Yeah.

[00:15:15] Bret Johnson : Don’t do boy babysitters. That’s just not… I was a boy. I never wanted to babysit. A boy babysitting is weird.

[00:15:22] Chalene Johnson : Oh, God. And this is my friends why Brett Johnson usually is just on Patreon.

[00:15:27] Bret Johnson : So I’m just giving people advice. I mean, I raised two children, and I’m pretty sure- It’s just your

[00:15:32] Chalene Johnson : opinion. You

[00:15:32] Bret Johnson : have to say that … It’s my opinion. Yeah. That’s f- I’m not saying, like, you have to do it. I’m just saying-

[00:15:35] Chalene Johnson : Yeah …

[00:15:36] Bret Johnson : if you can, get yourself a girl babysitter.

[00:15:40] Chalene Johnson : Yeah. If you wanna hear Brett Johnson unfiltered, it’s usually on Patreon, so everyone be cool, will ya?

00:15:45

Martha Stewart’s Halloween Backlash

[00:15:45] Chalene Johnson : Okay, so Martha Stewart, you don’t know what she did on Halloween?

[00:15:48] Bret Johnson : Nope.

[00:15:49] Chalene Johnson : Okay. So Martha Stewart, she sent off two apologies this week because… You know, do you know how old she is?

[00:15:57] Bret Johnson : She’s gotta be in her, like, early to mid-80s.

[00:16:00] Chalene Johnson : You’re right. She’s 85.

[00:16:01] Bret Johnson : Yeah. Well, I know she went away for

[00:16:03] Chalene Johnson : prison- She’s a badass

[00:16:04] Bret Johnson : when she was 70. Yeah.

[00:16:04] Chalene Johnson : I’m sorry. She’s a badass . If you guys have not seen her documentary, holy cow, she is a badass . She’s done her time in prison. Her bestie is Snoop, and she’s still launching things. Like, she launched her skincare line this year. She’s on QVC hustling 24/7.

[00:16:21] Bret Johnson : QVC’s still a thing?

[00:16:23] Chalene Johnson : Yeah. I mean, they filed for bankruptcy-

[00:16:24] Bret Johnson : That’s

[00:16:24] Chalene Johnson : what I thought

[00:16:25] Chalene Johnson : like, Chapter 11, but yeah. They’re, they’re still a thing. Okay. Every year she throws a huge Halloween party, kinda like Heidi Klum. Okay. You know He- you know Heidi Klum, that’s her thing, too, right?

[00:16:34] Bret Johnson : Yeah.

[00:16:34] Chalene Johnson : Okay. Did you see Heidi Klum’s costume this year?

[00:16:37] Bret Johnson : No.

[00:16:38] Chalene Johnson : Dude, it is so good.

[00:16:40] Bret Johnson : Is she still really attractive?

[00:16:42] Chalene Johnson : Oh, yeah.

[00:16:42] Bret Johnson : Yeah.

[00:16:43] Chalene Johnson : She’s gorgeous. I think she’s in her 50s. So-

[00:16:45] Bret Johnson : She’s gotta be older than 50.

[00:16:47] Chalene Johnson : Who?

[00:16:48] Bret Johnson : Heidi Klum.

[00:16:49] Chalene Johnson : Okay, you go ahead and look it up. But it, yeah, I also need you to pay attention ’cause you don’t know about the story, so- You

[00:16:54] Bret Johnson : know, I’m the, have ADHD, so I can listen in, also type and find out what Heidi Klum is.

[00:16:59] Chalene Johnson : Okay. I feel like shots were fired. So in 2024, Martha throws a huge Halloween party, okay? In 2024, she went as Queen Elizabeth I, and it was fabulous. This year, Martha posts, like all the other celebrities, on-

[00:17:17] Bret Johnson : You’re right, she’s 53.

[00:17:19] Chalene Johnson : Yeah, I knew it.

[00:17:21] Bret Johnson : June 1st, 1973.

[00:17:23] Chalene Johnson : Okay, hang on. So this is the thing that celebrities do.

[00:17:26] Chalene Johnson : They post a carousel of their Halloween costumes, right? Okay. Okay. Martha posts hers.

[00:17:33] Clip: Mm-hmm.

[00:17:33] Chalene Johnson : And, like, the first, whatever, slide of the carousel is, “My QVC candles are perfect for Halloween.” And then you swipe and it’s Martha with… I should just show you the photo. But she’s got, like, dirt on her face. She’s wearing, like, a hat half off her head.

[00:17:49] Clip: Mm-hmm.

[00:17:50] Chalene Johnson : Like a ski cap, no makeup. She’s wearing, like, disheveled, giant, dirty clothes, and she’s holding a sign that says, “I’m hungry. Help me.” So she’s trying to be a homeless person.

[00:18:02] Bret Johnson : Okay.

[00:18:03] Chalene Johnson : Okay? In the candle post.

[00:18:05] Bret Johnson : Okay.

[00:18:05] Chalene Johnson : Okay.

[00:18:06] Bret Johnson : In the candle post?

[00:18:07] Chalene Johnson : Like, so in the carousels- Oh, okay … promoting her candles. Okay. So first of all- Who doesn’t know that that is so wrong?

[00:18:14] Chalene Johnson : Like, it’s so politically incorrect- Yeah … and so insensitive.

[00:18:17] Bret Johnson : Correct.

[00:18:17] Chalene Johnson : Like, you know, is she a billionaire? I don’t know. But, like, she’s literally holding up a sign that’s like, “I’m hungry.” That’s not funny.

[00:18:24] Bret Johnson : No.

[00:18:24] Chalene Johnson : Everybody knows that’s not funny. Of course, everybody came for her immediately. She deletes the post.

[00:18:30] Chalene Johnson : But my thing is-

[00:18:31] Bret Johnson : Who, how does that get even out there?

[00:18:33] Chalene Johnson : Thank you. Thank

[00:18:34] Bret Johnson : you. That, that’s my first thing is, like, first of all, she took the photos, so that means she knew-

[00:18:40] Chalene Johnson : Somebody took the photos …

[00:18:41] Bret Johnson : meaning she was in on it. She was in the photo, so she knows what was gonna happen. Weren’t telling her, “Dress up like a homeless person,” and she didn’t know what was gonna happen.

[00:18:49] Bret Johnson : She knew what the carousel was gonna look like and the sequence of it. That means more than her and the photographer probably knew. Sh- her team probably knew. Of course. So how is her team not, like, sitting there going, “This is probably not the right thing to do.”

[00:19:02] Chalene Johnson : This is not good. Yeah, literally. Like, uh, that would never fly, and I don’t even have a team like that.

[00:19:06] Chalene Johnson : You know what I mean? Like, I mean, I do, but that was shocking to me. I’m like, okay, somebody on her team needs to get fired for this, and it doesn’t do any good for that person to take responsibility.

[00:19:16] Bret Johnson : No, ’cause

[00:19:17] Chalene Johnson : it’s her fault. In defense of Martha, but it, that person should come forward and say, “This was on me,” although Martha needs to apologize.

[00:19:23] Chalene Johnson : But I’m thinking, like, other people on her team. It’s not just Martha that should apologize. Like, the whole team should apologize.

[00:19:29] Bret Johnson : Unless, unless Martha is like she was in her documentary, and it’s her way or the highway, and she said- Oh, that’s true … “This is what I’m doing.” That’s true. Because right now, I’m telling you right now, watching that documentary, that was all Martha Stewart.

[00:19:41] Chalene Johnson : Oh, you, you think this is just, like, her straight-up idea?

[00:19:44] Bret Johnson : Her straight-up idea. Missed the mark thinking, like,, “Oh, maybe I can get away with this because it’s Halloween, and it’s, I’m dressing up like it, and I’m not, you know, whatever.” But watching that documentary, there’s nothing that gets by that woman.

[00:19:57] Bret Johnson : Like, she is the one that calls all the shots.

[00:20:00] Chalene Johnson : Yeah.

[00:20:01] Bret Johnson : So- That’s true … I’m, I disagree that somebody has to come forward and-

[00:20:04] Chalene Johnson : Well, yeah, maybe …

[00:20:06] Bret Johnson : I would say that she… I, I mean, maybe, but may- definitely she calls the shots.

00:20:10

Martha Stewart’s Two Apologies

[00:20:10] Chalene Johnson : Well, Page Six reached out to her to get a response, and she said… Are you ready for this? She said, “I’m distressed that my Halloween costume yesterday, which was intended to bring more awareness to a very serious subject of homelessness, has offended people, which was never my intention.”

[00:20:29] Chalene Johnson : what are you talking about? That your original post was intended to bring awareness? What are you talking about? That makes no sense.

[00:20:38] Bret Johnson : No. No.

[00:20:40] Chalene Johnson : Who helped her with that? You might be right.

[00:20:43] Bret Johnson : I think she’s just like- You might be right … she’s, she’s 85 and she’s bat crazy and she’s just like, “Whatever. I’m 85, what are you gonna do about it?

[00:20:51] Bret Johnson : Can you cancel me? I’ve already been to prison and snoofed my friend.”

[00:20:55] Chalene Johnson : Yeah. Literally. I don’t know. Awareness that, uh, and selling candles. When

[00:21:00] Bret Johnson : Martha Stewart was 50 years old, did anybody have it on her bingo card that she would go to prison and then be Snoop’s best friend?

[00:21:07] Chalene Johnson : Hell to the no.

[00:21:08] Bret Johnson : I know. Like, she was so, like…

[00:21:11] Bret Johnson : And she went to prison for basically nothing. She go- went to prison for, like, what everybody does. Like, you know-

[00:21:17] Chalene Johnson : Yeah, that’s

[00:21:17] Bret Johnson : right … that has money. Like- Oh, the,

[00:21:18] Chalene Johnson : yeah, I mean, if you watch the documentary they were, they were making a,

[00:21:21] Bret Johnson : what do you call it? They were making an example out

[00:21:22] Chalene Johnson : of her. Example of her,

[00:21:22] Bret Johnson : yeah.

[00:21:23] Bret Johnson : Yeah.

[00:21:23] Chalene Johnson : Okay, so then the same day she posts another statement, this time to her Instagram, okay? And she’s written, you can totally tell she wrote it on, like, her iPhone Notes.

[00:21:32] Bret Johnson : Yeah.

[00:21:33] Chalene Johnson : So to me I’m like, “Okay, this is for sure her,” because somebody on her team would’ve put it into, like, AI for sure.

[00:21:42] Bret Johnson : Yep.

[00:21:43] Chalene Johnson : So you could tell she wrote it on the Notes app, and she, like, just took a screenshot of it and posted it up and it’s, like, it’s completely different tone.

[00:21:50] Chalene Johnson : Here’s what she said: “It’s hard to admit when you’ve really screwed up. My earlier statement didn’t go far enough. I know many people are suffering economically. Wearing a costume like that, as I did, was insensitive and it wasn’t funny and I’m very sorry. Martha.” So, you know, the, the comments were kinda split.

[00:22:10] Chalene Johnson : Like, some people were saying, “Okay, yeah, it was terribly insensitive, and this isn’t funny.” And other people were like, “Well, at least she did bring some awareness to homelessness.” Yeah. And other people were like, “The only thing she brought awareness to was how disconnected-

[00:22:28] Bret Johnson : Yeah …

[00:22:29] Chalene Johnson : she is, and how disconnected wealthy people are from the rest of the population.”

00:22:33

Halloween Costumes and Changing Standards

[00:22:33] Chalene Johnson : So yeah, I mean, I can kinda see both. But when you think about it, like, I… I’m just gonna be honest, so please don’t cancel me. This is before, before we knew that it was inappropriate. There’s, like, a lot of things that I’m sure all of you can agree, there were comedy shows, there were TV shows, there were things that we all did when, when I was growing up, when I was a little kid In grade school, everyone got to dress up for Halloween, right?

[00:23:01] Bret Johnson : Mm, yeah.

[00:23:01] Chalene Johnson : I remember a little girl in our class came dressed in blackface- Mm-hmm … as Aunt Jemima. And hobos. Hobos was, like, the costume you wore, because you- It was

[00:23:13] Bret Johnson : easy.

[00:23:13] Chalene Johnson : What? ‘

[00:23:13] Bret Johnson : Cause it was easy. ‘

[00:23:14] Chalene Johnson : Cause it was easy. Yeah, because this is… You have to understand, back in the day, we didn’t have Amazon. You didn’t get a plastic costume shipped to you overnight.

[00:23:24] Chalene Johnson : Your mom had to fricking make it. Your mom had to pull out the sewing machine and sew it for you.

[00:23:29] Bret Johnson : I mean, see, the Aunt Jemima thing’s a little different, but what if in the ’80s a kid wanted to go as, like, Dr. J?

[00:23:37] Chalene Johnson : Dr. J?

[00:23:38] Bret Johnson : Like, a Julius Erving, the basketball player.

[00:23:40] Chalene Johnson : Well, you can’t, you just can’t do that.

[00:23:41] Bret Johnson : I know you can’t do it now, but, like, back then it was like you’re-

[00:23:43] Chalene Johnson : It wasn’t appropriate then either.

[00:23:45] Chalene Johnson : We just-

[00:23:45] Bret Johnson : You’re dressing up like a sports hero.

[00:23:47] Chalene Johnson : Yeah, but it’s just, it’s-

[00:23:49] Bret Johnson : Yeah, I know. It’s-

[00:23:50] Chalene Johnson : Yeah …

[00:23:50] Bret Johnson : yeah. It’s weird. But, I mean, it’s like, well, it’s almost like, I don’t know. Well- Would Dr. J think it was, like, a great gesture that he had a bunch of kids that wanted to dress up like him for Halloween?

[00:24:01] Chalene Johnson : It’s the changing of your skin tone.

[00:24:02] Bret Johnson : I-

[00:24:03] Chalene Johnson : That’s the problem Okay. And they could definitely dress up as Dr. J.

[00:24:06] Bret Johnson : Okay.

[00:24:07] Chalene Johnson : But you can’t wear blackface. They couldn’t- Okay … even, even then. Okay. But I’m sure, I’m sure it happened.

[00:24:11] Bret Johnson : Okay. Yeah, I’m sure it did. Well, that, that’s why it came to my mind, ’cause- Yeah … I think in California we had kids that dressed up like Magic Johnson.

[00:24:18] Chalene Johnson : Well, I have photos of myself and Monica. We used to dress up and we’d wear, like, 10 different costumes when we would teach a, a fitness class. And we would always try to, like, you know, do funny ones or sexy ones or whatever. And one of them was for Halloween, we dressed up as… I think she dressed up as an Indian, and I dressed up as a pilgrim Oh, that was like a year or two before anyone knew that that wasn’t appropriate.

00:24:47

Honeylove Bra Sponsor Offer

[00:24:47] Chalene Johnson : Like, you can’t dress up like an Indian. But think about all the things that kids used to dress up for. By the way, I got a new bra, and I’m kind of obsessed with it, so I have to tell you about it. I’ve talked before about the Honeylove bras, but they have a new bra. Holy cow. Now, when I first looked at it, I’m like, “This is too much material.”

[00:25:06] Chalene Johnson : I don’t normally wear this much material in a bra. You put it on and it feels like nothing. It is crazy. It’s completely wireless, super supportive, and I don’t even know how to describe it, but, like, it totally gives you, like, lift and separation, and it’s really sexy. It’s got this, like, signature X design in the center, so you’re not gonna get, like, uniboob.

[00:25:31] Chalene Johnson : It’s very, very comfortable. I don’t know how to describe it, but it is absolutely one of the best bras you will ever own, and I like it when I work out. I don’t think that this bra was made for that per se. Maybe it is. I don’t even know, but that’s what I’ve been wearing it for lately. It’s just got, like, wider straps, and they’re adjustable.

[00:25:50] Chalene Johnson : The only thing I will say, like, I wish they had made this bra in a racerback. Game on. But I love this bra. If you feel like, you know, your wireless bras weren’t built for your chest or, like, if you’ve got bigger boobs or whatever, the X-Balance bra is a bra that’s gonna change that for you. Like, it is so crazy supportive.

[00:26:07] Chalene Johnson : And right now, because they are a sponsor for the show, you get 20% off. Actually, you get 20% off everything at Honeylove. So go to honeylove.com/chalene. Experience the new standard in comfort and support with Honeylove. Honeylove.com/chalene. Okay, so here’s one. Jessica Alba. Okay, this one just happened.

[00:26:48] Bret Johnson : Okay.

00:26:44

Jessica Alba’s Nancy Kerrigan Costume

[00:26:49] Chalene Johnson : So you remember Nancy Kerrigan?

[00:26:51] Bret Johnson : Yeah.

[00:26:51] Chalene Johnson : Of course. So obviously for those of you, just in case for some reason you don’t know, it was 1994, right before the Olympics. There was a US championship. It happened to be in Detroit, by the way. Nancy Kerrigan is one of the contenders to win the gold. She is finishing her practice, and she gets attacked and whacked.

[00:27:16] Chalene Johnson : The person who arranged the attack was Tonya Harding. Hmm. It was actually Tonya Harding’s ex-husband.

[00:27:24] Clip: Yeah.

[00:27:25] Chalene Johnson : We were all glued to it. It was crazy, right? So Jessica Alba post her Halloween carousel, and she dressed up as Nancy Kerrigan with the white l- lace skating dress and a bloody bandage on her knee.

[00:27:39] Chalene Johnson : Then she had her friend, who went to Halloween party with her or whatever, holding a baseball bat dressed up as Tonya Harding. So what do you think about that one?

[00:27:49] Bret Johnson : Um, it is violence.

[00:27:52] Chalene Johnson : Yeah, it is violence. Like, to me, I don’t know- You’re

[00:27:56] Bret Johnson : pr- I mean, you’re-

[00:27:57] Chalene Johnson : It feels like pop culture. It feels like s- I don’t, I don’t know.

[00:27:59] Chalene Johnson : But yeah, apparently that was not okay and-

[00:28:02] Bret Johnson : I just think that that’s- … it got completely canceled … like, it, it’s questionable, so why do it? There’s a million different costumes that you could come up with. Like, you know.

[00:28:09] Chalene Johnson : Yeah, yeah. My brain isn’t good at thinking through all the ways that I’m being stupid. I need other people.

[00:28:15] Chalene Johnson : I’m like, “Hey, what do you think about this?” They’re like, “Yeah, don’t do that. That’s not funny.” I’m like, “All right.” Well, you know-

[00:28:20] Bret Johnson : You know what I think our best costume was?

[00:28:22] Chalene Johnson : What?

[00:28:22] Bret Johnson : That we ever dressed up as-

[00:28:24] Chalene Johnson : What? …

[00:28:24] Bret Johnson : you and I.

[00:28:25] Chalene Johnson : Dog the Bounty Hunter and Beth?

[00:28:27] Bret Johnson : Yeah, when we did Dog and Beth. ‘Cause we had their car, we had the Denali- We did

[00:28:31] Bret Johnson : and we just, we rode around obnoxiously to all of our friends and playing that- Yeah … their loud music.

[00:28:37] Chalene Johnson : Yeah, the theme s- theme show.

[00:28:38] Bret Johnson : That was so good. You had the- That was really good … right wig for me.

[00:28:41] Chalene Johnson : Oh, yeah. It was great. And,

[00:28:43] Bret Johnson : yeah, it was great.

[00:28:44] Chalene Johnson : That was

[00:28:45] Bret Johnson : one of our best. That was one of our

[00:28:45] Chalene Johnson : best. Remember the year you dressed up as me and I dressed up as you?

[00:28:48] Bret Johnson : Yep.

[00:28:49] Chalene Johnson : That was a funny one. We’ve done some pretty good ones.

[00:28:51] Bret Johnson : We did Justin and, and-

[00:28:53] Chalene Johnson : And Brittany …

[00:28:53] Bret Johnson : Brittany, the jean look.

[00:28:55] Chalene Johnson : Yeah, we did I Dream of Jeannie. What’s her husband’s name? Yep. He was- I can’t remember …

[00:28:59] Bret Johnson : Skipper or s- s- uh, captain. Captain

[00:29:02] Chalene Johnson : s- Captain something. Yeah. I can’t remember. Anyways, people commented under the, uh, post with Jessica Alba.

[00:29:08] Chalene Johnson : They were just like, “Wait, what’s funny about-

[00:29:10] Bret Johnson : Yeah …

[00:29:11] Chalene Johnson : a woman getting beat up by another woman?”

[00:29:12] Bret Johnson : Yeah.

[00:29:13] Chalene Johnson : Okay. So she deleted it.

[00:29:14] Bret Johnson : Yeah.

[00:29:15] Chalene Johnson : I don’t know that she apologized or-

[00:29:16] Bret Johnson : That was a marginal one.

[00:29:17] Chalene Johnson : Yeah.

[00:29:17] Bret Johnson : You know, that one could, could go either way. Yeah. You’re not really… It’s not l- r- really a race issue. It’s, you know,

00:29:22

McCall DaPron, Julia Fox and Kennedy Costumes

[00:29:22] Chalene Johnson : it’s who- Okay, how about this one?

[00:29:24] Chalene Johnson : This one’s insane. So one of the girls from Secret Lives of Mormon Wives.

[00:29:28] Bret Johnson : Yeah.

[00:29:28] Chalene Johnson : There’s, like, a spinoff of that show. It’s actually Orange County, which is so funny, ’cause the girls on the show aren’t even Mormon. It’s so weird. But anyways, there’s a gal on there, her name is, uh, McCall Depren.

[00:29:42] Clip: Mm-hmm.

[00:29:42] Chalene Johnson : And you guys probably haven’t even seen the show yet because it doesn’t even premiere until November 12th.

[00:29:47] Chalene Johnson : But her Halloween post, are you ready for this? She has her whole family dress up as the Kennedys on the day JFK was shot. So her husband goes as JFK, she’s in the pink suit, her four kids dressing up as their family on the day. Now, there was no blood on them, but like they dressed up as the Kennedys. Like, was she unaware that that was the day that he was murdered?

[00:30:14] Chalene Johnson : It’s weird.

[00:30:16] Bret Johnson : Yeah. Like, I don’t even know if I would know that if they walked in. Would I know that? Would you know that the, like- That’s a good question … she’s, I mean, she’s a pretty ordinary looking, like-

[00:30:26] Chalene Johnson : Yeah. That’s, that’s, that’s

[00:30:27] Bret Johnson : a good question … she would look like, she would look like every single photo I’ve seen of a brunette in that era.

[00:30:32] Chalene Johnson : Or Jackie Kennedy, sure, with the little pillbox-

[00:30:33] Bret Johnson : Yeah … you know, hat. I mean, they all looked the same back then. And- The way they had the same

[00:30:36] Chalene Johnson : hair … you know who Julia Fox is, right?

[00:30:38] Bret Johnson : Julia Fox.

[00:30:38] Chalene Johnson : Julia Fox. She’s like Uncut Gems. She’s the one that she’s like- Oh, yeah … super-

[00:30:43] Bret Johnson : Yeah …

[00:30:43] Chalene Johnson : she got famous for being Kanye’s girlfriend for a while.

[00:30:46] Chalene Johnson : Yeah.

[00:30:46] Bret Johnson : Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

[00:30:47] Chalene Johnson : Well, she dressed up as Jackie Kennedy, the bloody version-

[00:30:51] Bret Johnson : Ooh …

[00:30:51] Chalene Johnson : last year, and then defended it as a statement.

[00:30:55] Bret Johnson : Like what? Like- What do you mean like as a statement?

[00:30:58] Chalene Johnson : No one is surprised by anything Julia does. Like, they know she’s doing things for the reaction, so for some reason she got away with that.

00:31:06

Heidi Klum’s Halloween Transformation

[00:31:06] Chalene Johnson : Heidi Klum this year went as… Brett, you will die when you see the pictures. You guys, you have to look them up. Heidi Klum went as a severed hand. Please just look it up while we’re talking. You won’t even believe it. Type in Heidi Klum. It is insane. She throws a huge costume party, and she was transported to her own costume party in like a refrigerated truck.

[00:31:29] Chalene Johnson : Like, as if they were like-

[00:31:31] Bret Johnson : Oh, that’s her?

[00:31:33] Chalene Johnson : Yeah. Brett’s looking at it right now. Dude, look at her legs.

[00:31:37] Bret Johnson : Oh my gosh, it is.

[00:31:38] Chalene Johnson : Isn’t that wild?

[00:31:39] Bret Johnson : How big is, a costume is this?

[00:31:40] Chalene Johnson : It’s giant. It’s like-

[00:31:42] Bret Johnson : Yeah …

[00:31:42] Chalene Johnson : six feet tall.

[00:31:43] Bret Johnson : And the, I mean, that’s crazy.

[00:31:46] Chalene Johnson : I know. It’s so wild. Like

[00:31:47] Bret Johnson : she- The makeup is crazy … oh, she

[00:31:49] Chalene Johnson : makes,

[00:31:49] Bret Johnson : she spends a fortune

[00:31:49] Bret Johnson : you can see the, you can see where her face is.

[00:31:51] Chalene Johnson : She spends a fortune.

[00:31:53] Bret Johnson : Oh my God. It was- Look at that. That’s crazy.

[00:31:56] Chalene Johnson : I know. It’s so crazy. But, and it’s completely gross, and of course, it’s violent, right? Or is it? I don’t know. It’s gross. It’s disgusting. I mean, I don’t know. I was like, “Okay, I’m sure there’s people who have a problem with it.”

[00:32:10] Chalene Johnson : I’m sure people do, but I haven’t heard that they have. I think the biggest difference is-

[00:32:18] Bret Johnson : I mean, she really goes all out. I-

[00:32:19] Chalene Johnson : Oh, she goes all out. Yeah. She’s amazing.

[00:32:23] Bret Johnson : It looks like she was like teasing it for a long time too. Yeah. Oh my gosh. They, she has them putting on makeup. You have… If you haven’t seen this, her Instagram, you need to go check it out.

[00:32:32] Chalene Johnson : Yeah. You guys have to go see her, her Instagram. It’s insane.

[00:32:34] Bret Johnson : I mean, it’s like 15 posts of it.

00:32:36

Online Outrage, Billy Bush and Cancel Culture

[00:32:36] Chalene Johnson : Yeah. I think the biggest difference is like, you can’t make it about a person, an actual person. You have to think about- who you’re offending, and also to be creative. But the other thing is, no matter what it is, someone’s gonna be offended.

[00:32:54] Chalene Johnson : So maybe don’t pick the obvious blatant ones, but I don’t care what it is you post, somebody is going to be offended. I mean, remember when you and I posted the funny carousel of me kind of like making fun of the fact that you tell me I can’t scream when you’re driving?

[00:33:11] Bret Johnson : Yes.

[00:33:12] Chalene Johnson : And how I s- always say, “I’m actually doing you a service.

[00:33:15] Chalene Johnson : This is so-” Yeah “… we don’t die.”

[00:33:16] Bret Johnson : Yeah.

[00:33:17] Chalene Johnson : And so anyways, I did this carousel where I Kind of reenacted what would happen if I was actually silent and we got in a rollover. And so we reenacted the rollover, right? And it’s clearly very funny. Like, I’m wearing heels and a dress, and you can tell we’re… It’s, it’s just so ridiculous

[00:33:36] Bret Johnson : Yeah, one of your, one of your f- shots is you’re outside the car looking back in.

[00:33:40] Bret Johnson : I mean, it’s like so- Yeah,

[00:33:41] Chalene Johnson : it’s so dumb. So anyways, I had a woman that was like, “Unfollowing. This is so disgusting. Do you understand how triggering this is for some people?” I’m like, “What isn’t triggering?” I mean, can we still have humor any way, shape, or form? It’s not…

[00:33:56] Bret Johnson : Yeah,

[00:33:57] Chalene Johnson : yeah. You know?

[00:33:58] Bret Johnson : Our funny post is making you feel triggered is not our problem.

[00:34:03] Bret Johnson : That’s your, you and your therapist

[00:34:04] Chalene Johnson : problem. Yeah. I, I think you just have to realize, like, there are people who are-

[00:34:09] Bret Johnson : Triggered by

[00:34:09] Chalene Johnson : something … chronically online looking for a reason, uh, to find something wrong that you’ve done and something wrong that you’ve said. To take offense to anything that you’ve said, and it’s like, you know, if you are so worried about that 1% of the population or that small percentage that’s going to find fault in everything that you do and how you say it and who you l- all the things, you just can’t be yourself.

[00:34:32] Chalene Johnson : You can’t be authentic.

[00:34:34] Bret Johnson : Yeah. You just have to realize that those people, they hate themselves, and they’re just looking online for anything to, like-

[00:34:41] Chalene Johnson : You’re right …

[00:34:41] Bret Johnson : they have mental issues and they, you know, they don’t like their life, and they’re probably on the back half of their life, and they’ve made a lot of mistakes, and they just don’t like what’s going on in their life.

[00:34:54] Chalene Johnson : So tell me, what do you think Martha Stewart is feeling today?

[00:34:57] Bret Johnson : Nothing. She could care less.

[00:34:58] Chalene Johnson : You think so?

[00:34:59] Bret Johnson : Yeah. She’s 85. She could care less.

[00:35:01] Chalene Johnson : Huh.

[00:35:02] Bret Johnson : She’s probably like, “That was probably pretty stupid, but you know what? It’s gonna take a couple months and it’ll be over, and then I can go- Not

[00:35:07] Chalene Johnson : even a couple months.

[00:35:08] Bret Johnson : Yeah, a, a month.

[00:35:10] Chalene Johnson : I mean, I mean, the way people respond under the comments is like- They’ll

[00:35:12] Bret Johnson : be buying… They’ll

[00:35:12] Chalene Johnson : be- She’s also 85.

[00:35:13] Bret Johnson : Yeah, and she’ll be selling something for Black Friday, and everybody will still be buying it. They’re not gonna, you know.

[00:35:19] Chalene Johnson : Come on, she went to prison. Yeah. She knows how to rebuild an empire.

[00:35:22] Chalene Johnson : She knows how to come back from a thing or two.

[00:35:24] Bret Johnson : Yeah. She’s, there’s nothing gonna happen to Martha Stewart. She’s, like, one of those people that’s, like, not cancelable. Like, she- And I- … she took it down. She apologized.

[00:35:31] Chalene Johnson : And pe- And she’s 85, and I, I know that we can’t just, like, excuse people for their age, but, like, also if you’re 85 and you’ve…

[00:35:39] Chalene Johnson : Some people would say you should know better. But you have to understand, like, the world is so different, and yeah, I don’t think she’s probably too worried about it. But I was listening to this interview with, what’s his name, Billy Bush.

[00:35:50] Bret Johnson : Mm-hmm.

[00:35:50] Chalene Johnson : He’s the one that-

[00:35:52] Bret Johnson : I know who he is …

[00:35:52] Chalene Johnson : there was this, the hot mic that caught-

[00:35:55] Bret Johnson : He was the one interviewing Trump- Yep

[00:35:57] Bret Johnson : when Trump just said, yeah.

[00:35:58] Chalene Johnson : Grab ’em by the D word. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. And he laughed at it.

[00:36:03] Bret Johnson : Yeah, because it was, it was a nervous laugh like, “What the hell did this guy just say?”

[00:36:07] Chalene Johnson : Yeah. Yeah. I don’t think anybody wouldn’t laugh. I mean, I shouldn’t say anybody, but most people, that’s your reaction. I know people have said things to me that were so freaking offensive or crazy or insane, and I’m just like, to process it, sometimes that’s your reaction.

[00:36:22] Bret Johnson : Yeah.

[00:36:23] Chalene Johnson : It’s like, “Huh. Wait.”

[00:36:24] Bret Johnson : The only people that would say, “Oh my God, I would’ve said something,” right there are people that it’s hindsight. Like you, you know you wouldn’t- Yeah … ’cause you’ve never been in that position.

[00:36:31] Chalene Johnson : Oh.

[00:36:31] Bret Johnson : You’ve never been

[00:36:31] Chalene Johnson : in- The things I’ve said in hindsight.

[00:36:33] Bret Johnson : Yeah, yeah. I mean- Absolutely

[00:36:34] Bret Johnson : like literally, like you’re a Monday morning quarterback. Until it happens to you, you don’t know what you would say.

[00:36:39] Chalene Johnson : But I was listening to an interview with him-

[00:36:41] Bret Johnson : Mm-hmm …

[00:36:41] Chalene Johnson : and another celebrity, and they were talking about their moments when, you know, they were canceled.

[00:36:47] Bret Johnson : Mm-hmm.

[00:36:47] Chalene Johnson : You know, you don’t think about that.

[00:36:49] Chalene Johnson : Like he said, you know, “People make jokes now all the time, and other people laugh, but they don’t get fired.” And he’s like, “But I didn’t just get fired.” He’s like, “My world, it stopped. I just can’t even tell you how dark my life became in that moment.” And then I can’t remember the celebrity he was talking to.

[00:37:11] Chalene Johnson : It was like a podcast. And the celebrity had been through their own canceling, and the celebrity was saying… Or, or it wasn’t a celebrity actually. It was like a, another podcast host. And the podcast host was saying like, “You just don’t even realize how dark your life can become when overnight you feel like the whole world hates you and doesn’t understand you and doesn’t believe you.

[00:37:38] Chalene Johnson : It just, it’s hard to explain how devastating that feels.” And I was like, wow. God, I hope I never have to experience that. But I mean, there are stories of people who were in the public eye and things like that happen, and they end up un-aliving themselves.

[00:37:55] Bret Johnson : Mm-hmm. Oh, yeah.

[00:37:57] Chalene Johnson : That’s sad.

[00:37:58] Bret Johnson : Yeah. Can’t

[00:37:58] Chalene Johnson : be. And you just, being chronically online is really not good for anybody.

[00:38:04] Bret Johnson : Correct.

00:38:05

Estrogen Warning Labels and Progesterone

[00:38:05] Chalene Johnson : There’s a new update to the estrogen box label. Do you know about this, honey?

[00:38:13] Bret Johnson : No, I, I, I don’t follow the estrogen crowd.

[00:38:16] Chalene Johnson : Okay, I’m gonna let you tune out on this one.

[00:38:18] Bret Johnson : Yeah. I’m gonna tune out on the estrogen update.

[00:38:20] Chalene Johnson : Okay. Well, for my ladies, you actually need to know about this. As you know, there has been quite a shortage of the estrogen patch, and a lot of that has to do with the fact that the FDA has taken the cancer warnings off of the box, off of the labels if you will.

[00:38:41] Chalene Johnson : But there is still one cancer warning that remains, and I can see why, if you are someone who’s worried about the risk of cancer and estrogen, why this would be very confusing. Okay, so let’s slow this down, because the part I think that’s getting lost in the headlines is who this warning applies to and why, and what they’re kind of leaving off.

[00:39:06] Chalene Johnson : So the first question you have to ask yourself is, do you still have a uterus? Because if you’ve had a hysterectomy or your uterus w- was removed Your ovaries might still be there, and those are two separate things. So if you still have a uterus and you’re taking systemic estrogen, we’re not talking about topical right now, right?

[00:39:27] Chalene Johnson : We’re not talking about vaginal estrogen. We’re not talking about estrogen that you’re putting on your face. We’re talking about systemic estrogen that you’re either doing with an injection or a patch or a troche, you know, where you’re putting it under your tongue, or a, a lotion. Generally, systemic estrogen, you need a progesterone to protect your uterine lining.

[00:39:52] Chalene Johnson : That’s what the remaining uterine cancer warning is all about, okay? So right now, there is still a warning on the box of estrogen that says that there’s a risk of uterine cancer. But unfortunately, what most doctor- not most, I shouldn’t say most. What some doctors aren’t telling their patients or what is not being communicated in the headlines is that these things can be mitigated for a woman who does have her uterus if she’s taking progesterone.

[00:40:25] Chalene Johnson : I want you to listen to this clip from friend of the show, Dr. Mary Claire Haver.

[00:40:30] Clip: But what they found was a certain percentage of the population was developing an endometrial hyperplasia and cancer from unopposed estrogen. Well, that’s very fixable by giving a woman with a uterus progesterone. As long as you do that with the uterus, you’re not gonna increase your risk of endometrial hyperplasia or cancer.

[00:40:47] Clip: So then it was like, well, only if you have a uterus do you need this progesterone. Well, it has benefits and can be taken very, very safely. There are multiple progestogens on the market. So let’s kind of touch on that. So we have progesterone, which is what our body makes naturally, right? And then we have progestins, which are chemically synthesized in the lab, which are converted to progesterones.

[00:41:09] Clip: They bind to the receptor. They actually work really great. But especially Provera, which is medroxyprogesterone acetate, that’s the one that actually has a significant increased risk. The absolute risk is low, but there is an increased risk with Provera versus an oral micronized progesterone or some of the, the transdermal progestins that are safer.

00:41:31

Surgical Menopause and Breast Cancer Care

[00:41:31] Chalene Johnson : That brings up another question. What happens when both your ovaries have been removed? Who’s preparing women for what comes next? Because this isn’t a small group of women who’ve had this happen. It’s estimated that 90,000 women do not have their ovaries. They’ve been removed for non-cancer related conditions, and more than half of those women are under 50 for whatever reason.

[00:41:56] Chalene Johnson : Maybe it’s endometriosis. There’s a whole variety of reasons why women might have had their ovaries removed But before that surgery, who’s sitting down with these women and saying, “Okay, here’s what’s gonna happen. Here’s what’s gonna happen when your hormones drop. Here’s what you might feel. Here are the symptoms you might be experiencing.

[00:42:14] Chalene Johnson : Here’s the plan that we’re gonna put in place for you”? Dr. Corinne Menn, she is a board-certified OBGYN, a Menopause Society certified practitioner, and, this is important, she’s a breast cancer survivor who has experienced surgical menopause herself. And I want you to listen to what she has to say about the lack of preparation, the lack of care for women in this condition.

[00:42:42] Clip: You would not take testicles off a man and not have a conversation about what you were gonna do about that loss of testosterone. You would have a plan. They always have a plan. But most of the time, women don’t have a plan. With surgical menopause or some other medication-induced menopause that’s very abrupt, there is no time.

[00:43:00] Clip: There’s no transition period, and you go from all to nothing overnight. So these women need to be prepared, because that very abrupt withdrawal can trigger not only worse, more severe hot flashes and night sweats, but can really provoke significant mental health issues, mainly because of setting off insomnia, setting off new onset of anxiety, and it also greatly increases chronic disease risk acceleration.

[00:43:29] Clip: But when we’re cutting out your ovaries, we know exactly what’s gonna happen. And so if you’re the surgeon doing that, and you have not given her pre-op counseling and made a plan for how you’re gonna manage the estrogen deprivation, then you’re not doing your job. And it’s really a shame, because it’s needless suffering, ’cause we’ve got guidelines, and we know what to do.

[00:43:51] Chalene Johnson : So let’s be clear. If hormones aren’t appropriate for you, you still deserve a plan. You know, you still have to think about, we have to think about how that im- impacts women, how she can help to mitigate some of these symptoms. What does she need to do for her sexual health, for her bones? What should that conversation look like?

[00:44:13] Chalene Johnson : Right now what it looks like is many practitioners are like, “Well, you can’t take estrogen, so good luck.” You know? Especially women who’ve had breast cancer or are facing that or m- maybe they’ve been diagnosed with the BRCA gene or they’ve got a family member who’s had breast cancer, and so they’re getting advice maybe from an oncologist.

[00:44:36] Chalene Johnson : But we need to make an important distinction here, because some breast cancers do in fact need estrogen to grow. So doctors may use medication that then suppresses the ovaries’ estrogen production. And that’s often what you hear referred to as chemical menopause. And chemo can also cause menopause by damaging the ovaries.

[00:44:59] Chalene Johnson : Uh, there’s just a lot of different situations where how women are being treated is nuanced. If lowering estrogen is part of treating your cancer, giving it back could work against the treatment. That’s valid. So I’m not saying that every woman should obviously get, you know, on estrogen or needs to be doing hormone replacement therapy.

[00:45:21] Chalene Johnson : What I am saying is that I think it’s really important for anyone who’s listening to this show to understand that you should have a plan, though. Like, you should be working with a clinician who understands that those symptoms are serious, and that your plan needs to be more than like, “Okay, well, call us if you have some hot flashes.”

[00:45:40] Chalene Johnson : You know what I mean? Like, there’s your sleep, your mood, your bone density, you know, your sexual wellness, your skin, your hair, all these things. Oh my God, your collagen production. And do women even know who they should be calling, or how to assess the knowledge of your practitioner? I mean, AI is great for this, but it’s nice to walk in there prepared.

[00:46:03] Chalene Johnson : Because I think, especially for women with breast cancer, you know, you’re re- you are trusting your oncologist, right? You just wanna make sure that you live and that you don’t get cancer, and so you’re willing to do whatever it takes. But I just think an oncologist’s primary understanding is about cancer.

[00:46:21] Chalene Johnson : And I’ve just heard from so many in this audience, women who are treating with an oncologist who really doesn’t seem to have the latest information as it relates to their treatment and hormone replacement therapy. I just want you to know that you should feel empowered, and you have every right to ask additional questions and to do additional research and to get a second opinion, and to ask, “Hey, so what happens next?”

[00:46:48] Chalene Johnson : What other non-hormonal treatments are available to me? Is there an option for vaginal estrogen cream? Bringing in a menopause specialist to work with your oncologist might be the right way to go. And I think it’s obviously very important to protect yourself from any reoccurrence, but also to h- have– help you to function day to day, because we just don’t take this as seriously as we should.

[00:47:15] Chalene Johnson : You know, I also wanna say, if you have been through breast cancer and you’re thinking like, “Okay, what am I supposed to do? I’m not sleeping or I don’t want to put myself at a higher risk, but I also don’t know if my medical doctor has this type of experience,” or maybe you’re experiencing other symptoms that many women don’t even realize are related to the decline in your estrogen, like getting more UTIs.

00:47:41

Midi Health and Questions for Your Care Team

[00:47:41] Chalene Johnson : So I have to say, I want you to make sure you’re speaking with a clinician who has this type of training. It’s why I always talk about Midi Health. It is why today I placed an order for additional estrogen myself through Midi Health. I have a telehealth provider. It’s so simple. You can literally do it online.

[00:48:01] Chalene Johnson : But what I think many of you may not be aware is that Midi Health actually has a breast cancer survivorship program, where they have clinicians. You wanna– when you book your appointment, make sure you let them know that’s specifically who you want to work with. They will listen. They will help you explore non-hormonal options and even hormonal options to share with you the research, so that you can make an informed decision, or make a decision w- where you’re working with a clinician at Midi and your oncologist.

[00:48:35] Chalene Johnson : So if breast cancer runs in your family and you’re nervous about your options, you can talk to them about that too. And yes, when appropriate, they can even order a mammogram at an imaging center for you. Please, if you haven’t, I encourage you to book an appointment. Go to chalene.com/midi, M-I-D-I. That’s what you do to book your first visit.

[00:48:57] Chalene Johnson : Tell them specifically what it is you’re looking for. And, you know, whether you’re talking to Midi or your oncologist or another member of your care team, here’s what I would ask. I would say, “What can I safely do for my symptoms? What other options do I have available to me? What can I be doing to monitor?

[00:49:17] Chalene Johnson : And when are we gonna check back in? How do I know if this is working? What are all of my options?” I mean, you, you just have to walk into these appointments with a list of questions, and you’ve gotta be your own advocate. You don’t need to be an– a menopause expert, but you do need to know what questions you should ask at your next appointment.

Moving, Bigger Closets and Shopping Habits

[00:49:36] Chalene Johnson : I forgot to mention, Brad and I didn’t dress up this year for Halloween, because we’re in the middle of a move. Moving sucks, you guys. It’s back-breaking, and people who are movers, like the team that we hired… By the way, I’m gonna give them a little shout-out. This is not paid. This is not sponsored. We didn’t even get a discount.

[00:49:57] Chalene Johnson : But I just think we need to normalize shouting out businesses that do a, an exceptional job just because they do an exceptional job. I don’t know if they’re in other states. I think they are maybe. Do you know if they’re in other states, honey?
[00:50:09] Bret Johnson : Who?

[00:50:10] Chalene Johnson : The moving company.

[00:50:12] Bret Johnson : Yeah, they’re in New York.

[00:50:13] Chalene Johnson : Okay. Flat Rate Moving.

[00:50:15] Bret Johnson : And so look, see if they’re in other states, but I saw Instagrams for New York and Miami.

[00:50:20] Chalene Johnson : They were so amazing, the best experience we could have ever possibly imagined. They were so fun. I mean, I wasn’t even, like, lifting boxes or moving things the way these guys were. Holy cow, I just can’t even tell you how hardworking these boys were, and we gave them big tips.

[00:50:36] Chalene Johnson : And I also posted them up on my TikTok, ’cause I got them all to dress up in my wigs at the end of the day, like, my big giant drag queen wigs that I collect, and do a little dance for me. They’re like, “No, I don’t know. I don’t know.” I’m like, “Come on.” And then I showed them how many followers I had, and they’re like, “Okay.”

[00:50:56] Chalene Johnson : Anyways, they were adorable. But holy cow, I just thought to myself at the end of the day… So they show up at 9:00, and at the end of the day at 5:00, I’m like, “Oh, my God, I’m so tired. My back is just killing me. They have to wake up and do this again tomorrow.” And they were so sweet, and polite, and fun, and they’ve been…

[00:51:14] Chalene Johnson : I ask, ’cause of course I’m following around asking them a million questions, just getting in their way. But

[00:51:19] Clip: yeah,

[00:51:19] Chalene Johnson : so that’s what we’re doing. Now the unpacking begins, and I just have to say I’m a little nervous, ’cause we’re moving into a bigger space, and I need to quiet my consumerism. That’s all I’m gonna say.

[00:51:35] Chalene Johnson : I thought I had become a minimalist.

[00:51:37] Bret Johnson : You’re not.

[00:51:39] Chalene Johnson : I don’t know if you can hear Brett in the background. He goes, “You’re not.” Yeah.

[00:51:42] Bret Johnson : I was shocked on how many bags and boxes there were that moved out of this.

[00:51:49] Chalene Johnson : I know. It’s not okay. I’m gonna fix it, honey.

[00:51:52] Bret Johnson : Well, you, you’re gonna need to, because the bedroom that we’re moving into is three times the size.

[00:51:57] Bret Johnson : Your closet is 10X.

[00:51:59] Chalene Johnson : I know. That’s dangerous. It’s dangerous. I’m gonna improve, I promise.

[00:52:05] Bret Johnson : I mean, look at me. My minimal… The guy looked at it, looked at us and goes, “Brett, where are all your clothes?” You imagine if I had as many clothes as you?

[00:52:13] Chalene Johnson : I know, but you wear a black T-shirt and black shorts every day. I still,

[00:52:16] Bret Johnson : but, but I could have 40 of them.

[00:52:19] Chalene Johnson : Well, that doesn’t take up much space.

[00:52:20] Bret Johnson : But here’s, here’s the thing.

[00:52:21] Chalene Johnson : What?

[00:52:21] Bret Johnson : Is I did catch you.

[00:52:23] Chalene Johnson : Yeah?

[00:52:23] Bret Johnson : And you just need to catch yourself, because I was like, “Chalene, you don’t even wear jean cutoff shorts, and you had 17 pairs of them.” ‘Cause you-

[00:52:32] Chalene Johnson : Well, I have a long pair, a short pair, and- You don’t even wear them

[00:52:34] Chalene Johnson : I know, I know I never wear them, but like what if?

[00:52:37] Bret Johnson : Because y- what you do is you see them on a fashionista-

[00:52:42] Chalene Johnson : Uh-huh …

[00:52:42] Bret Johnson : six months before they’re gonna be in style- Uh-huh … and you start buying them-

[00:52:46] Chalene Johnson : Yep …

[00:52:46] Bret Johnson : and hoarding them because you’re gonna be the one that has everything. And then I never

[00:52:49] Chalene Johnson : wear them.

[00:52:50] Bret Johnson : And you never wear them.

[00:52:51] Chalene Johnson : Yeah, you’re right, I know. Okay, I’m gonna fix my ways.

[00:52:53] Bret Johnson : You have to let, you have to let it marinate a little bit.

[00:52:55] Chalene Johnson : Okay. Will do, sir. Hey, thank you so much for listening. I love you, I mean it, and we’ll talk to you soon.
