Never Ever Call A Kid Fat!

This episode is all about body image, especially when it comes to kids. If you don’t have kids, then this might give you some insight into issues you have about your own body.

In this episode I shoot straight with you. Your kid already knows that they need to lose weight. They see it on television, they hear it from their piers, and they don’t need you telling them too! What they need from you is love.

“So Chalene, what do I do if I have a kid that’s overweight and I’m concerned about their health?” Well, they’re struggling with their heath, with their body image, they’re struggling with having the right knowledge of how to eat right and be active.   So talk to them about what it means to be healthy, about how to take care of your body, about what to put in to your body to feel great and about what activities are out there for them to try. Talk to your kids about health… not about weight.

Don’t make your stuff your kid’s stuff. The things you’ve been through are not your kids problem so don’t project it on to them. Keep it to yourself. And don’t talk poorly about your body in front of your kids. They hear that, and they internalize it as THEIR body not being good enough or beautiful.

Ultimately the best thing you can do is to be a roll model; you buy the food, you set the standards. If you’re coming home, plopping down on the couch and eating junk, so will your kids. You and I both know that kids do not want to be told what and what not to do. So show them. Lead be example. Don’t punish them for making an unhealthy choice. Support and motivate them.

We have an obligation to do the BEST and be the best for our kids.
