Periscope is Dope, Yo!

Periscope is a relatively new app and service from Twitter that allows you to stream live video and audio. It’s really convenient because it integrates into your Twitter account and it gives everybody the ability to interact directly with the world. While this resource may not be for everybody out there, entrepreneurs should definitely spend some time with Periscope and decide if it’s for them.

Remember: Early adopters to a social media space have an upper hand when it comes to establishing themselves as an expert. So, again, just make sure you check out Periscope for yourself and decide if it has a place in your business.

Okay. Here are some quick Periscope facts:

  • It’s an app that integrates with Twitter.
  • It runs off of your Android or iPhone.
  • It’s super easy.
  • It uses the front or rear facing camera.
  • Broadcasts disappear after 24 hours.
  • Viewers show their appreciation to you by tapping their screens and sending you hearts.

Getting Started

Set up your profile and write a few sentences about yourself. Make sure you include your website URL (preferably a freemium related to the types of live broadcasts you’re doing).

Before you start broadcasting, remember that your livestream will disappear after 24 hours. In the Periscope settings, you have the option to save the video to your phone. Over at Team Johnson, we save the stream to my phone AND we visit www.watchonperiscope.com. At that site, you can view all of the current Periscope broadcasts. We make a screengrab of the show from there (because it’s higher quality than from the phone) and match it with the audio from the phone. Then, we edit out the boring parts and VOILA! You’ve got something fun and engaging to send to your email lists.

Here’s some tips to get you started on Periscope

1. Watch other people

Obviously, you can always watch me (@chalenejohnson). But, if I haven’t broadcast in the last 24 hours, try out Kim Garst, Natalie Jill, and Chris Ducker.

2. Use a really catchy title

Something like: “10-minute Strength Training Tutorial – LIVE NOW – @chalenejohnson heart contest”. Also, remember that you can use emojis!

3. Keep it brief. (15-20 minutes)

4. When starting, have the back of your camera facing something interesting (because you can’t default to looking at you first.) Don’t turn the camera towards you unless you’re ready to start your content.

5. Have a call to action

“If you stay tuned to the end, I’ll give you a link to my free tips.”

6. Make sure that you use good lighting.

Daylight is great! Make sure to test your lighting before you start the broadcast.

That’s not everything, but it will get you started. Go check it out for yourself and have some fun!
