The De-Clutter Project Part 2

The Chalene Show
EP. 281

Clutter is a major problem in our lives… BIGGER than you may even realize.

This is a Part 2 episode.. Therefore, If you haven’t already, go and listen to Part 1 now!

Clutter provides stress that you can FEEL. In this episode, I will share with you some of the voice-notes I received from individuals who responded/shared their own struggles with clutter after listening to Part 1. When you listen to these voice notes, you will see that YOU. ARE. NOT. ALONE.

After looking deep into the neurological side to this, I learned something INSANE. Get ready… the average person has 7,000 items in their household that they do not use or touch. Wait what?!!! Crazy right?!

First, I want to address that organization and clutter are completely different things.
Systems and organization can only be created once the clutter is gone. So that’s where we begin this journey, through DEcluttering.

First order of business: DECLUTTER.

Here are the steps to move your life forward through decluttering!

Step 1: take a look at your calendar. Find a block of time you can 100% devote to decluttering. Even if it’s just a few minutes, find it. Identify how much time you have. Based on the amount of time you have, we can move into step 2.

Step 2: Pick an area/space to declutter that fits the amount of time you have available. Be realistic. Pick something that you can take from start to finish with the amount of time you are able to dedicate. I’ll give you some examples if you listen in!

Step 3: Visualize what you want that space to look like, now until forever! If the area is a small part of a bigger project (like a closet within your office for example) narrow your vision to the specific area you want to focus on. Go on pinterest and have fun with it. Get inspired if you have a hard time creating that vision on your own.

Step 4: THIS IS THE FIRST PART WHERE YOU CAN START TO BUILD SYSTEMS AND ORGANIZATION. Every single item you touch needs to go to one of four places, hence the “4 Bin System”. Bin #1 is for trash, Bin #2 is for donations, Bin #3 is for things that need to be relocated (there should be very few things in this bin), Bin #4 is for things you will keep (do not put these things back right away).
I try to read an organization or decluttering book at least once or twice a year. They always help to inspire me to create new systems! The Life Changing Magic to Tidying Up written by Marie Kondo is a popular one that I adore! Be sure to check that one out if you need somewhere to start. Until I read this book, I had a hard time letting things go. I will share with you how this book changed my thinking and my LIFE in this episode, be sure to listen in!

A common excuse we use is… “I may need this sometime in the future”. Yeah, I know you’ve used that one before. Trust me, 99% of the time you won’t need it. You’ve got to let go, figuratively AND literally. Things do not define us.

The service I mention within this episode that I use to sell my clothes/purses/shoes/other things is TheRealReal.com. Why do I like this site the best? You get 50% of the original price of your item, and you get every penny of that. For Bret and I, we donate the money we receive (every penny) to organizations that support the survivors of child abuse. This is just what we choose to do and it feels really good. Maybe selling your things will provide you with the ability to give back as well! Or, you may just need the extra money right now. Wherever you stand, be sure to check out the site, I love it!

Another reason we hold on to things is because we don’t want to be caught off guard. We create crazy scenarios in our head to justify holding on to junk. It’s ludacris. You can go out and buy a replacement if need be in the future.

The last thing I want to address is COLLECTING. If it’s just a collection to have a collection, there’s no point. STOP!!

That’s it for this episode. The next part of this series will be released in the near future, so be sure to subscribe so you don’t miss it!

I hope you enjoyed this Part 2 episode on how to DEclutter your life, one step at a time.
