Did You Know This?

Everyone keeps talking about AI like it’s just some helpful tool… but what’s actually happening right now? It’s a lot bigger than most people realize.

This episode starts with something that honestly feels a little unhinged… AI employees showing up in company directories, massive layoffs being blamed on automation, and creators competing with content that isn’t even made by real humans anymore. And once you see it, you can’t unsee it.

But then it takes a turn… into looksmaxxing, teenage boys chasing perfection, peptides being used way too casually, and the kind of trends spreading online that most of us don’t even realize are influencing people this young.

And in the middle of all of that… some very real life updates, including what happened after Bob’s memorial, the regret that hit afterward, and the unexpected perspective that helped shift it.
This one covers a lot… but it all connects.

Introduction

..you need to know about this. Today's episode looks back at what's happening with YouTube creators like myself, how it could impact my show. [Mentions Bob's memorial service and life updates.] There's so much I need to show you. This is a new episode — if you tune in on Wednesdays...

00:30–01:30

Origin Story: Discovering YouTube in 2004–2006

My first infomercial launched in 2014 [~2004?]. YouTube launched [by] the Google guys in 2005–2006, and YouTube was still really early then. You'd post something, and it could just go viral randomly. I uploaded a clip, some turbo videos, and right away something struck me — I started seeing a lot of people posting fitness content on YouTube.

01:30–02:30

Before YouTube: The Old World of Fitness Content

For some of you, you can't even imagine a time when that was shocking. Before that happened, the only way you'd ever see a workout was if you bought something like a Jane Fonda tape. DVDs weren't even really a thing. To get in incredible shape or work out with a top trainer, you had to go to the gym. There was no way to see a variety of different workouts. That was twenty years ago — it feels like yesterday, but twenty years ago.

02:30–03:30

Spotting the Shift

When YouTube launched, I picked up on something. I knew in that moment this was going to shift the industry I had just gotten into. By 2007–2008, I was having conversations with my husband — I was seeing people post fitness content on YouTube. They were going viral. I was seeing hundreds of people posting their little workout clips, the way they trained legs, the way they did their cardio. And I had a very strong feeling: this is going to wipe out fitness infomercials.

03:30–04:30

YouTube Partner Program & Smartphones

Around 2007–2008, YouTube launched their Partner Program and YouTubers started making money. The audience was still growing. By 2009–2010, it kicked into gear a lot faster. You could embed YouTube videos anywhere. Then in 2010–2012, everyone started having smartphones. That's when suddenly we stopped watching TV shows at a specified time — we watched on demand.

04:30–05:30

The Death of Channel Surfing & the Infomercial

Most people stopped channel surfing. Remember when you'd record programs on DVR? That changed everything. Now here I am looking at all this content on YouTube for free — full workouts, everything you could possibly need. There are really good workouts, lots of variety. And on top of that, we're no longer randomly channel surfing to see what's on.
