How to be Comfortable on Camera | Using Video to Build Your Business

SMART banner

I had a wonderful Periscope session where I answered questions directly from viewers about how to use video to build their business. This is an important topic for me because I truly believe that video is one of the key ingredients to building your business. Since you can talk directly to viewers, it allows them to get an understanding of who you are and why you might be able to help them.

Now, why do I think this? Because creating video changed my life – it really did. Just go check out, www.30daypush.com and sign-up to see what I did. (Obviously, I’d love for you to take the whole course, but even if you don’t, just go see what worked for me.) I recorded those videos from my desktop computer – no fancy crews or sets – just me talking directly to the camera.

Do you recommend shooting video with glasses?

It’s very difficult to film and not see the glare with glasses. Nine times out of ten I don’t film with glasses on. However, if you DO record with them on, make sure you set your lighting properly and then don’t move your head too much.

What do you do if you hate yourself on video?

Get over it! You like yourself in real life, don’t you?! Just look into the lens and pretend you’re talking to your best friend – be natural, be yourself! Also, maybe you should consider NOT re-watching your videos – that’s what I do. (You should probably watch enough to take some notes on how to improve, but you don’t have to re-watch everything every time.)

What are the best colors to wear?

The best colors to wear on video are one that are not distracting – solid colors, no patterns, and shirts that you won’t sweat through. Don’t wear noisy jewelry. Don’t wear anything TOO trendy, since these videos will live forever!

How can I avoid sounding boring?

Be short, be brief, be concise, and be done. Create a bullet list!

Start each video with a short bio introducing yourself, then introduce the concept and what you’re listeners are going to learn today, then tell them the content, review, and lastly, provide a call to action (“Don’t forget to share this with others!”).

What type of content should you be making?

The information that you just learned – the stuff that’s relevant to the audience you’re trying to capture. What have you learned in the last 6 months? Share that with others! And, yes, other people have created similar content, but they’re not YOU. Be real and share yourself and your knowledge with others – there are people out there who are waiting for someone like you to help them.

What equipment do you use for video?

You’re going to be great on camera, because you’ve already spent a lifetime being yourself! Just look into the camera and pretend like you’re talking to your friend. You’ve got this.
