This unique modality involves tapping on key meridian points on your body with your fingertips, all while vocalizing positive affirmations. It’s believed to soothe the amygdala, the part of the brain responsible for our emotional reactions, including stress and anxiety.

Breaking the Loop: How Tapping Resets Your Brain’s Stressful Rhythms

Think of your brain as an old vinyl record that keeps skipping on a certain line, playing the same worries and fears repeatedly. Tapping can be likened to manually moving the needle past the scratch, allowing your brain to process thoughts more healthily. While the exact neuroscience behind it is still under research, studies have confirmed that tapping can lead to a significant reduction in the stress hormone cortisol. So, at the very least, you get to experience deep relaxation.

The Unveiling of Negative Thoughts Through Tapping

Now, you might be wondering, “Is this for real?” Well, the beauty of tapping is in its simplicity and its adaptability to individual needs. You can use tapping to process a variety of emotional hurdles, from acute anxiety and chronic stress to performance jitters and emotional triggers.

To get started: 

  1. Identify a specific emotion or recurring negative thought pattern that’s causing you distress. 
  2. Assign it a number on a scale of 1 to 10 for intensity. This allows you to track any changes over time. 
  3. Then, craft an acknowledging statement like, “Even though I am stressed, I accept myself completely.” This works as a form of emotional validation while simultaneously affirming self-compassion.
  4. Next, tap your way through a sequence of meridian points, including the top of your head, eyebrows, under your eyes, under your nose, under your mouth, collarbones, under your armpits, and your wrists. 
  5. Observe your emotional intensity throughout the process and continue tapping until you notice a decrease.

Tapping and Real-Life Transformations: Jen’s Story

Let me share the incredible journey of my friend Jen, a breast cancer survivor who had been caring for her husband with a brain tumor.
