Search the word purpose on Amazon and you’ll get over 100,000 results! Clearly, this is a super hot topic. Millions of people around the world are constantly searching for more, for better, for SOMETHING meaningful.
But the idea that we were each born with one thing that’s our purpose, is erroneous, silly, and quite limiting. That’s why we get so caught up in asking ourselves: “Is this my purpose? Is that my purpose?” We’ve made such a big deal about the fact you have a singular life’s purpose, it’s no wonder people get freaked out about identifying the right thing to take action on.
We don’t need to search for our life’s purpose. It’s all about embracing the fact that our life serves a purpose. And that is… serving others.
That said, it is certainly beneficial to have a cheat sheet, if you will, to help guide you in finding your purpose at this time in your life.
While I give you 4 simple questions to help you find your purpose in my new Podcast over at The Chalene Show, today I’d like to focus on one – in particular – as it specifically blends passion with purpose.
QUESTION: What do you get so wrapped in that you forget all other things? I mean, you’re so consumed with this passion that, all of a sudden, basic everyday life events are taking a back seat! You barely remember to:
- Eat
- Check your phone
- Go to the bathroom
- Work out
- Sleep
This thing – whether hobby or topic or subject or activity – just results in you losing all track of time!
Because you want to better understand it. You believe in it.
Perhaps it’s something you’ve read about. Or a cause you stumbled across on YouTube. Maybe it’s a daily hobby that goes back to your childhood. Whatever it is… you can’t get enough of it!
Well, that’s one of the measures (how time flies!) I often use to know that I’m stepping into my purpose. When I say my purpose, I mean my purpose for the moment.
I’ve had many purposes (and so have you), and I know I have many more (so do you) to serve in the time that I have here on earth.
When I found myself trying to heal my brain and figure out how to get healthier on the inside, I couldn’t focus on work. I couldn’t focus on podcasting or teaching people how to build their businesses. A break from those things was mandatory.
The only thing I wanted to do was dig deeper into research. And, let me tell you, I couldn’t get enough of reading scientific papers, going back and forth between different experts’ blogs, reading books, listening to podcasts, attending seminars, and… you name it. It didn’t seem possible to quench that thirst. That’s the purpose (131 Method) that I’m serving in this season of my life.
Not too long ago, the purpose I was serving was helping other people figure out how to increase their income and build online businesses the smart way WHILE also being present for their families. That was Smart Success.
I felt that same insatiable thirst where I just would spend hours upon hours trying to develop better systems, studying other experts, figuring out how to simplify the message, and just trying to take in as much information as possible.
It was what I wanted to talk about, teach, and share at that juncture in my life. That was a purpose I was living.
As noted above, in my new trending podcast, you will find personal anecdotes wrapped around 4 easy questions ensuring you hone in on your purpose right now.
Remember, who you are and what you’re about today, may not be the same as yesterday.
Hopefully, we’re all growing in this lifetime, right?
To bookend this blog, I’d like to bring it all back to serving others. As the years go on, there will be new challenges and hardships you will face. Life has significance when you use those things to serve others.
Let me be clear, that can be one person. It doesn’t mean you’re standing on a stage or writing a book or people know your name or you’re changing the world because, in effect, when your life plays a role of significance in the life of someone else, you’re changing the world one person at a time.
Oh! And be sure to check out this week’s business blog, How To Find A New Purpose In Life, where I explore how to navigate new obstacles that suddenly appear and your purpose changing because of it!
