Signs Your Obsession With Your Health Is Unhealthy
For millions of Americans what once started as an interest in health and fitness has slipped into an unhealthy obsession. For some that obsession goes undiagnosed, even praised in the name of health.
I know. I was there.
In today’s diet and fitness culture, eliminating entire food groups like sugar, fat, carbohydrates or dairy is the norm. It’s common practice to assign morality to diet and label the occasional indulgence as a “cheat meal”. A brisk walk or the active day that was the norm in our parents generation is now frowned upon, replaced by the rigors of 90 consecutive days of Ultra HIIT Training #NoDaysOff. Whatever it is, in the pursuit of health, we’ve been made to feel it’s never enough, except of course when it comes to food, in which case, it’s way too much!
This steady barrage of commercial and social media messaging is enough to create a negative feedback loop in our heads.
- “Your body fat isn’t low enough”
- “You need to workout longer”
- “You’re eating the wrong thing”
- “You’re doing it wrong”
That chiseled physique seen in her latest Instagram post gives the illusion of perfection, the picture of health. Few realize that behind the 6 pack and overpriced high waisted leggings, it’s likely your Instagram role model is walking a fine line between health conscious and fully obsessed. When the pursuit of health slips into the dark crevices of addiction and obsessive thoughts interfere with your ability to be fully present, spontaneous, and just enjoy life… there’s a good chance that you’re experiencing what mental health professionals call “orthorexia”.
