Public Speaking Tips — From The Stage to Instagram Live

share this:

Public speaking need not be just from stage. It also applies to going live on Facebook, Instagram TV or webinars. Bottom line: if anyone other than you is going to consume it, it’s — in my opinion — public speaking.

Public Speaking Can be Live on Social Media or The Stage

Now, getting really good at it can make a huge difference in your career, opportunities, the number of sales you close and the amount of emails you convert, etc. It all boils down to how persuasive you can be. And, for many of us, that persuasion comes with our ability to help people; to solve a problem, basically.

In this blog, I’m going to share with you the 5-Minute Formula that I use to prepare for public speaking — from social media to the stage — where the intent is to convey an idea or solve a problem.

Keep in mind, though, that if I’m preparing to sell on video (i.e., teach and then to go into a sale) there are extra pieces.

If you take the time to read and write these tips down, it’ll make it so much easier for you the next time you plan to post a video (live or not) on whichever platform you love most. Trust me, your delivery matters.

To be clear, all of the tips below can be crunched down into a 5-minute Instagram TV or stretched out into an hour and 30-minute live public speaking event.

#1: Be relatable.

Can you think of a TED talk or any public speaking example — that people rave about — where the speaker didn’t start with something super relatable?

I didn’t think so.

No one is expecting you to be a comedian, but you have to begin with a story that allows your audience to immediately let their guard down.

Be Relatable When Public Speaking

#2: Identify a shared problem.

In other words, what is the issue you’re eventually going to solve for them? You have to call that out and bring attention to it.

#3: Make a quick promise.

My mentor, Brian Tracy, calls this the, tell them what you’re going to tell them. And I like to call it the, promise.

Do these lines sound familiar?

  • Stay with me today, and I’m going to…
  • In this video, I will…”
  • By listening to this podcast, you will know how to…

You get the idea!

#4: Explain your authority.

This isn’t about rattling off all of your credentials (e.g., what University you went to or how successful your business is, etc.). But rather, sharing with your audience what knowledge you’re bringing to the table on whatever topic you’re speaking on.

What credibility do you have so that I know you’re worth listening to?

#5: Describe what the problem looks like.

It’s really important here that you use emotion. You want your viewers / listeners to relive it and tap into themselves — feeling the problem. The key, though, is you must define your approach. Think of it as,

“Okay, there’s a million people out there who solve the problem I do. But, what makes my solving proposition unique?
